What I Used To Think Of Jail Until I Met A New Friend
THE CRIME I COMMITTED
My crime was that, I stood in as a guarantor for a friend to secure a bank loan and she ended up not paying all the amount that required of her. And I had no idea that this was going on until the bank called notifying me to come over. I went there the next day thinking I could have some agreement with them to pay whiles I look for my friend.
As I entered the bank managers office, I got introduced to two detectives who will be taking me into custody unless I pay up the remaining balance that day or I tell them where they can find my friend and arrest her instead. I couldn’t believe this was happening until I was behind bars. This was where I met a new friend Achaa.
THE INMATE
There was a woman who had been there for two days over domestic issues and her name was Achaa. She was stronger than I was because it was my first time to sleep alone without my child beside me. It was very difficult as a mother. She did her best to cheer me up throughout the night but I couldn’t sleep. She told me she would be released the next day and that made me more sad because I was going be left alone in the police cells and I know that’s not a place anyone even for a minute, but I wished within me that she would be spending some few days more with me.
TWO WEEKS IN JAIL
I spent two weeks in jail and sworn not to befriend anyone nor do good to anyone for that matter. Because I ended up in jail by helping out a friend. The cold nights, loneliness and the fact that it was Christmas holidays and I wasn’t at home celebrating with my family especially not being able to celebrate with my child, that really broke my heart.
ACHAA THE NEW FRIEND
Achaa changed my decision on friendship again when she visited me and brought along food, clothes, pillow and blankets since I had to sleep on the bare cold floor because there was nothing to sleep on. She ended up helping me to pay part of the amount and she was there when I released. Then I remembered something my grandma used to tell us, ” everything happen for a reason “. I never thought that being betrayed by someone who was a dear friend could help me find another wonderful and kind-hearted person who has now become like sister to me till date.
THE LESSON
Spending time in jail has thought me not to judge quickly and not everyone who ends up in jail is guilty or a bad person. Rather, the innocent are victims of circumstances like myself and you are likely to meet some of the lifelong friends at the unusual places.
